Notes on Earthlings, Who Are You Voting For?Notes on Earthlings, Who Are You Voting For?

Hi Otto and everyone else at Inventura,

It was nice to see most of you in the film. After watching there is one thing I know: I won't vote for the Czech Communist Party. ;) Personally I would have liked to know more about the various parties, their leaders and what they stand for. But this is not necessarily important for understanding the film. The ways politics are made are more or less the same in the "western world".

There are so many narrative strains that as a foreigner you don't lose interest. Did you ever try to make a couple of inserts with some quick information about the parties and candidates for the use abroad? Something like: the so and so party stands for this and that and the team is going to meet their leader so and so... or: The favourite colour of the Nazi party is yellow and they like to beat up gipsies.

Despite it all the basic conflict of "unnormal" people dealing with the "normality" of politics is enormously strong. If this wasn't the case, Inventura wouldn't exist. I liked the mix of footage from the various teams. I also liked to watch the process of how the members of the team make up their minds and form their opinions. I liked how professional the team seemed to work.

Within this framework Ales is something like a joker or trickster who contributes a totally different point of view. Naturally one can argue whether this and even the whole setting is exploitative and ask oneself if the team members and especially Ales have been used as a kind of fools or court jesters. For me I decided that this isn't true. They are doing things their way and they are dead serious about it. And we should never forget that non-disabled people can identify with your team. What answers do we get from politicians in everyday life?

Finally I like the guerrilla feel of the film which is completely different to Bernd's approach (the approach of the author from the ABM organization dealing with politics in Germany - Inventura´s note). His film had been done in a highly official way and with long negotiations with the press departments of the various parties and politicians. Question is, what will and how must the film about the next elections look like? Rather like Bernd's?

Last thought about the film. The team is portrayed as a group of good and responsible citizens. And that's the most important thing of all.

Best regards to all of you

Gregor

I loved watching the way the politicians reacted - nervousness, distrust, denial - or a discreet word with their 'aides' followed by patronising acceptance - it's nice to see them squirm!

Politicians really only want to meet tame members of the public, spout their party line and get away from 'the people' as quickly as possible.

I agree about the Communists - they seemed to be exactly like the National Front in the UK - though on opposite sides of left / right, they were on the same side - fascist bullies and very frightening.
