The Husa na provázku’s Pig doesn’t Caricature Havel
16.04.2010, Josef Fojt The Husa na provázku theatre in staged a preview of a little-known play by Václav Havel from 1987 called Prase (Pig) in ’s Archa on 12 April 2010 directed by the theatre’s art director, Vladimír Morávek. The play was performed in the presence of its author, his wife Dagmar and several other famous people (Jan Svěrák, Magdalena Dietlová, Dana Hábová) who came to see the play. The main character of the play is Václav Havel himself played excellently by Milan Holenda (not only his acting, but also his voice is excellent). What is interesting is that the actor does not clear his throat often and does not use the word “že” (question tags), features which are so typical of Havel. The actor himself explains that if he used it, he would be caricaturing Havel too much, which is not his intention, and when he recently saw the documentary Citizen Havel by Pavel Koutecký and Míra Janek, he did not hear this “že” in the film to his surprise. Holenda’s stage partner is Michal Dalecký playing an American reporter, who is seemingly questioning Havel throughout the entire play. I would also like to mention two female roles played by Eva Vrbková and Andrea Buršová as Havel’s friend Kešot and Havel’s wife Olga, respectively. The play is set during a pig slaughtering in the countryside and it is enriched by paraphrases of the aria “Let us rejoice and be merry” from The Bartered Bride.
